Japanese Breakfast make their long-awaited return to our shores with a gothic twist on their starry-eyed sound. It’s officially JBrekkie season at RISING. Between adapting her best-selling memoir, Crying in H Mart, into a screenplay and heading to South Korea to write more, Michelle Zauner recorded her fourth full-length album as Japanese Breakfast, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women). Now she’s bringing her widescreen indie sound to the big stage at PICA, in her first Melbourne/Naarm show in eight years. The latest Japanese Breakfast set is their follow-up to the disarmingly joyful post-lockdown LP Jubilee—with its gusts of horns and bubblegum synths. After a decade making the most of improvised recording spaces set in warehouses, trailers and lofts, this is the band’s first proper studio release. They’ve introduced the new era with a lush, moody ballad, ‘Orlando in Love’. It’s a stormy ode, inspired by a Renaissance poem, about a foolish man who lives in a Winnebago and gets seduced by a siren. And it’s pure Japanese Breakfast. Music that’s eclectic, elegant and alive with literary wit. Playful even when it’s dark. Willing to verge into dream pop, glide into shoegaze or do some tasteful rock theatrics, as the moment suits. The pioneering London duo bring a fuzzed-out new suite of electronica-tinged post-punk. Mount Kimbie are in full band mode. They’re pushing the gain and hooking up the pedal-trains to realise their shipwrecked new sound at the Forum. The duo first set themselves apart in the late-noughties dubstep scene by leaving the club and listening in. ‘William’ from their breakthrough EP was cut together from field recordings of a skateboarder rolling across the pavement. From then on, they’ve intuitively balanced hooks with abstraction. Whether experimenting with ambient and garage or collaborating with Travis Scott and James Blake, they know how to crack a track open and let the interesting textures bleed through. For their latest, The Sunset Violent, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos have dusted off their guitars and plugged back into the post-punk electronica they explored on Love What Survives. Only this time they’ve somehow managed to crank the fuzz while polishing the sheen and deepening the groove. It’s music that revels in the details with a vagabond pulse and a dead-eyed stare.

Over the years since, he has voiced classic records from the likes of Larry Heard, Modeselektor, The Bug or Deadbeat, while also self-producing albums of his own unique take on dub, reggae and electronic music. In 2023, he signed to British-Nigerian DJ Richard Akingbehin’s label Kynant Records for his first solo album in 20 years, Tikiman Vol. 1. Danny Howells [UK] Robbie Lowe Danny Howells A bit about Danny… Danny Howells doesn't fit into the standard dance music paradigms. With a reputation as "the DJs' DJ", he has remained stoic in the face of ever-shifting trends and fads in dance music since he broke through into the global house music consciousness in the late-'90s. He doesn't churn out productions to "remain relevant", instead only releasing music as and when inspiration strikes. He's not a publicity hungry, social media devotee. He's not someone who feels the need to reinvent himself with new monikers or side projects, nor someone who aggressively pursues a maxxed-out DJ'ing schedule. Quietly ploughing his way through the house music continuum, he has remained one of the world's most captivating selectors precisely because of these organic means. That and his impeccable selection, distinctive style and silky mixing, of course. Recent years saw a bunch of new releases including three very well received EPs on Germany's much-loved 8bit label, as well as tunes such as “Earthlings”, “Shortwave” and “Dayshift”. He initially gained recognition as a member of the critically acclaimed drum and bass trio Ivy Lab. Halogenix's distinctive sound is characterized by its intricate rhythms, lush melodies, and meticulous attention to detail. Over the years, he has garnered a reputation for pushing boundaries and exploring new sonic territories within the drum and bass spectrum. His solo work and collaborations have received widespread praise from both fans and fellow artists, solidifying his position as a key figure in the electronic music scene. His discography includes music on respected labels such as Critical Music, Metalheadz, and his own imprint, Gemini Gemini. Ouissam Ouissam Mokretar has changed the dance music scene wherever he has laid down roots. His approach to a dance floor is as simple as it is intuitive and elegant: nothing that can make a room shudder with joy is barred from his selections. The founder of Hong Kong’s Cliche Records, he was one of the first in that city to cultivate a disco-house-techno synthesis that shifted the local understanding of what could be danced to. He went on to create the Homesick and Fragrant Harbor labels, before setting his sights on Hanoi in Vietnam, establishing the dance mecca, Savage. He also curates Equation festival, now entering its fifth year. Ouissam Mokretar is a DJ with a pure love and appreciation for the power of music, transmitting that love to his dance floors. Moving effortlessly between disco, house and techno, long-lost gems collide with cutting-edge groove to produce a sonic aesthetic that is simply irresistible. Zwi Zwi is a Vietnamese DJ raised in Moscow, driven by a discerning ear and an obsession for unearthing elusive vinyl records from an increasingly exciting corner of dance music. Influenced by hip hop and old school love songs, his signature style is a timeless sound that is as grimy as it is sensual. Expect a blend of dark and groovy from the introspective digger showcasing a balance of innovation and nostalgia through progressive house, techno and electro.
