Japanese Breakfast make their long-awaited return to our shores with a gothic twist on their starry-eyed sound. It’s officially JBrekkie season at RISING. Between adapting her best-selling memoir, Crying in H Mart, into a screenplay and heading to South Korea to write more, Michelle Zauner recorded her fourth full-length album as Japanese Breakfast, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women). Now she’s bringing her widescreen indie sound to the big stage at PICA, in her first Melbourne/Naarm show in eight years. The latest Japanese Breakfast set is their follow-up to the disarmingly joyful post-lockdown LP Jubilee—with its gusts of horns and bubblegum synths. After a decade making the most of improvised recording spaces set in warehouses, trailers and lofts, this is the band’s first proper studio release. They’ve introduced the new era with a lush, moody ballad, ‘Orlando in Love’. It’s a stormy ode, inspired by a Renaissance poem, about a foolish man who lives in a Winnebago and gets seduced by a siren. And it’s pure Japanese Breakfast. The pioneering London duo bring a fuzzed-out new suite of electronica-tinged post-punk. Mount Kimbie are in full band mode. They’re pushing the gain and hooking up the pedal-trains to realise their shipwrecked new sound at the Forum. The duo first set themselves apart in the late-noughties dubstep scene by leaving the club and listening in. ‘William’ from their breakthrough EP was cut together from field recordings of a skateboarder rolling across the pavement. From then on, they’ve intuitively balanced hooks with abstraction. Whether experimenting with ambient and garage or collaborating with Travis Scott and James Blake, they know how to crack a track open and let the interesting textures bleed through. For their latest, The Sunset Violent, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos have dusted off their guitars and plugged back into the post-punk electronica they explored on Love What Survives. Only this time they’ve somehow managed to crank the fuzz while polishing the sheen and deepening the groove. It’s music that revels in the details with a vagabond pulse and a dead-eyed stare.

Paul St Hilaire AKA Tikiman is the original voice of dub techno, pioneering the genre together with Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald as Rhythm & Sound. Over the years since, he has voiced classic records from the likes of Larry Heard, Modeselektor, The Bug or Deadbeat, while also self-producing albums of his own unique take on dub, reggae and electronic music. In 2023, he signed to British-Nigerian DJ Richard Akingbehin’s label Kynant Records for his first solo album in 20 years, Tikiman Vol. 1. Now, St. Hilaire and Akingbehin are close collaborators, performing their hybrid set at clubs and festivals across Europe and planning a follow up album for 2025, also marking 10 years of Akingbehin’s label Kynant. Waajeed Asseem Waajeed (Robert O’ Bryant IV) is a Detroiter, musician, and educator. Raised in Conant Gardens on Detroit's east side, at nineteen Waajeed was offered a scholarship to the College for Creative Studies for visual arts. In 2000, along with Saadiq (Darnell Bolden), he formed the Platinum Pied Pipers. Together, they produced compilation albums with Georgia Anne Muldrow, Tiombe Lockhart and Dwele. In 2002 he founded the label Bling47 to amplify the music of his community. Through this, Waajeed was the first to sign J Dilla and also released his own solo project, B.P.M., melding both Techno and hip hop sensibilities. Gero Whether providing the soundtrack to a mesmerising sunset or an evolving sunrise, Gero routinely shapes captivating sets perfectly pitched to his surroundings. Starting out by playing music for friends at house parties, Gero has quickly moved on to performing at some of Jakarta’s hippest parties alongside his Discouture collective. In 2016 he moved to Bali, joining forces with Dea to launch Studio Eksotika — the bespoke audiophile record store where he continued exploring his passion for diverse selections, from European disco and zouk to Balearic and rare groove.

With a deep-rooted passion for drum and bass music, Halogenix has made a significant impact on the genre's landscape. He initially gained recognition as a member of the critically acclaimed drum and bass trio Ivy Lab. Halogenix's distinctive sound is characterized by its intricate rhythms, lush melodies, and meticulous attention to detail. Over the years, he has garnered a reputation for pushing boundaries and exploring new sonic territories within the drum and bass spectrum. His solo work and collaborations have received widespread praise from both fans and fellow artists, solidifying his position as a key figure in the electronic music scene. His discography includes music on respected labels such as Critical Music, Metalheadz, and his own imprint, Gemini Gemini. Ouissam Ouissam Mokretar has changed the dance music scene wherever he has laid down roots. His approach to a dance floor is as simple as it is intuitive and elegant: nothing that can make a room shudder with joy is barred from his selections. The founder of Hong Kong’s Cliche Records, he was one of the first in that city to cultivate a disco-house-techno synthesis that shifted the local understanding of what could be danced to. He went on to create the Homesick and Fragrant Harbor labels, before setting his sights on Hanoi in Vietnam, establishing the dance mecca, Savage. He also curates Equation festival, now entering its fifth year. Ouissam Mokretar is a DJ with a pure love and appreciation for the power of music, transmitting that love to his dance floors. Moving effortlessly between disco, house and techno, long-lost gems collide with cutting-edge groove to produce a sonic aesthetic that is simply irresistible. Zwi Zwi is a Vietnamese DJ raised in Moscow, driven by a discerning ear and an obsession for unearthing elusive vinyl records from an increasingly exciting corner of dance music. Influenced by hip hop and old school love songs, his signature style is a timeless sound that is as grimy as it is sensual. Expect a blend of dark and groovy from the introspective digger showcasing a balance of innovation and nostalgia through progressive house, techno and electro.
